Family Therapy
Family therapy is a type or style of therapy addressing the needs of the entire family as a whole system. This approach is rooted in the idea or belief that people and relationships are always interconnected with the family and that they reciprocally shape each other. The behaviours of the individual are sustained by the family beliefs and dynamics which have to be treated as a whole.
The therapist works with the whole family and underlying patterns to facilitate relevant changes and growth. Family therapy may also involve work with smaller subsystems in the family such as the sibling and parent subsystems. This systemic approach may also extend itself to include the school or other subsystems.
Family therapy has been used effectively where families, and or individuals in those families experience or suffer with serious psychological disorders (e.g. addictions, eating disorders), interactional and transitional crises in a family’s life cycle (e.g. divorce, new addition to the family); and as a support of other psychotherapies and medication.
