Family Therapy

Family Therapy

Family therapy is a type of therapy that focuses on the needs of the family as a unit. Through working with the family as a whole system, the approach is rooted in the belief that people as well as relationships are interconnected.  These relationships shape and affect one another in the family. Family beliefs sustain who an individual is. It is for this reason that these beliefs and the family as a whole are sustained.

The therapist works with the whole family and underlying patterns to facilitate relevant changes and growth. Family therapy may also involve work with smaller sub- systems in the family. These may include siblings and parent s as well as their relationships. This systemic approach may also extend itself to include the school or other areas.

Family therapy works effectively when families or individuals within the family structure experience or suffer with one or a number of issues.

  • Psychological disorders (addiction, eating disorders)
  • Dealing with interactional and transitional crises (divorce, new additions to family)
  • Relationship problems within the family structure
