Crawling is an important developmental milestone for the growing infant. Besides strengthening balance, muscle tone and eye-hand co-ordination it also helps the baby integrate left and right brain co-ordination. The above are important for future skills such as reading, writing and gross motor activities. In addition, the baby that crawls tends to notice his or environment/surroundings more. Crawling also encourages abstract thinking skills as the baby gets to know their position in the environment and the space around them. Best of all the baby feels excited when they achieve their big goal of reaching Mom or Dad!
